Folding and cutting several layers of fabric can be tricky as the fabric tends to shift. I’ve discovered a product that makes the process more foolproof.
Created in 2012 by quilter Terry McFeely, Terial Magic is a revolutionary liquid starch stabilizer.
Terial Magic was created out of frustration in working with limp and fraying fabrics. Creator Terry McFeely found a solution with an organic natural compound that makes almost any fabric more paper-like and stable yet not too stiff to cut or sew.
Terial Magic was originally designed for 3D fabric art and art quilting; but soon became a favorite for machine embroidery, inkjet and laser printing on fabric, t-shirt quilting, electronic cutting, die-cutting, and numerous other uses without the use of traditional stabilizers.
The instructions for using Terial Magic are simple:
- Spray to saturate fabric. I placed the fabric in a large bowl and sprayed till wet. I scrunched the fabric in my hands to ensure all areas were covered. I then held it up to the light to be certain and sprayed any areas that needed it.
- Hang fabric to dry until damp. I used a clothes hanger with clamps ( a pants hanger would work well) and hung it in my shower.
- Iron fabric till dry for a smooth, paper-like finish.

Personally my applique work has improved since I’ve been treating my fabric with Terial Magic. As the fabric now acts like paper, the added stiffness lends itself to precise cutting, piecing and sewing and the edges don’t fray.
Additional uses for Terial Magic include: inkjet & laser printing, machine embroidery, applique (raw edge and turn under), fabric art & crafts, machine cutting and tee shirt quilting/quiltings. If you like to learn more about the product visit https://terialmagic.com/.
