Binding Boards = binding hack!

Google “binding board” and you’ll find sites promoting binders, boarding and cutting & pressing mats.  Everything BUT!  I’m always on the lookout for simple ways to make my quilting easier, quicker and more enjoyable…and I found one!  Best yet, I had most everything I needed right at home and once I’d gathered the 4 necessary materials, it took less than 15 minutes to assemble.   Those 15 minutes will save hours of time ironing binding and numerous burnt fingers.

6″ x 12″ wood paneling

7″ x 26″ 80/20 batting

7″ x 28″ light colored cotton canvas

**2″ x 7″ cotton canvas if you’d like a handle

The finished binding board and 2 long doll needles that I purchased at Hobby Lobby.

The doll needles allow the binding board to be fully customizable.  The space between them should measure the width of your individual iron.   They are then inserted to measure the finished width of your desired binding.

Lay your heated iron over the binding between the needles and continue to pull the binding fabric through the needles until you have finished.   Your binding will be folded and ironed for you.

If you’d like to watch a video on how to make a binding board, click on this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fhmMH2pBUM.  It will take you to T Row Studies where Terry Rowland will demonstrate the process.

I guarantee the binding board will quickly become one of your favorite quilting tools.  In addition, it doesn’t need to take much real estate to store.

Until next time,

Kathy

  1. This was an easy project to complete. My request for a 6″ x 12″ wood piece came from my husband’s stash. It came together quickly and I know it will be my ‘go-to’ every time I need to iron the binding in half.
