Fiber Art Studio

Spent a good part of today taking a Free Motion Quilting class at The Fiber Art Studio in Oxford.  What a joy to be learning and practicing something I love.  Kate Themel is the owner/teacher who shared her quilting secrets with us.  The group was small which gave us all a chance to ask questions.

Kate’s set-up makes learning easily accessible to all.  Her sewing machine, a Janome, is positioned in the front of the room.  A camera transfers the image of her sewing to a monitor mounted on the wall.

Kate shared her process for the creation of her art quilts.  This drawing is actually a quilt!

This piece was designed and created for Viewpoints.

Have you ever had the opportunity of seeing the “back” of the science center?  This is the back of Kate’s quilt.

Kate admits she likes “shiny things”.  Many of her pieces have been created from photos she’s taken of metal objects.

My personal favorite!  The background fabric was painted by Carol Easton.

I took Kate’s magnolia class several years ago.

The oval inside of the foot is made of organza while the thread consists of several layers of floss.

Kate’s brother took this photo which she subsequently cropped.  It’s a must see close up as the details are magnificent!

Highly respective of copyright, Kate takes her own photos or works with those taken by family members.  That’s one talented family!

The Fiber Studio is located in Oxford, CT.  If you’d like to take a class with Kate, you can reach her at thefiberartstudio@gmail.com.  Her website is katethemel.com/classes if you’re interested in learning more about her studio and what she offers to the aspiring quilt artist.
