Summer Get-Away

Summer Get-Away by Kathy Nutley

This piece was created in response to a call for entry by Fairfield Fiber. The challenge was to design a piece using wonky log cabin blocks to reflect a season of the year. I chose summer as my least favorite season….another challenge for me. The three ants represent my grand-children absconding with their favorite treat!

Choosing the absolute best piece of watermelon for my husband to photograph was the first step. I painted my own fabrics and drafted the piece. Each log cabin block was sewn separately and raw edge applique was used to include the icons of summer. Free motion quilting within the watermelon reflects its texture. This piece hung in the Fairfield University bookstore in the “Seasons” exhibit.

The ant as the caboose is carrying an American flag in honor of my grand-son, Jax, who was born on the 4th of July.
