Five sheets of metallic foil, 5″ x 12 silver, gold, copper, purple, turquoise
1 oz jar of foil adhesive (plenty to last!)
Adding a bit of bling in just the right place can make our quilts sing! I shied away from foil as I believed it to be a complicated process with the possibility of ruining my piece. Not so! The process is easy, relatively quick and unbelievably accurate.

- Decide where you’d like to add the foil. Use a small paintbrush to apply a layer of glue to cover the area. I used a small angled paintbrush to apply the glue and felt as if I was painting on fabric.
- I worked at my ironing board with a piece of parchment paper nearby. Lay your fabric glue side up. Place the foil with the color side up over the glue.
- Lay the parchment paper over the foil. Using a hot iron, scrape firmly with the edge of your iron as both pressure and heat are required to transfer the foil. I used a cotton setting on my iron.
- The key to this process is to let the fabric/foil cool completely. I placed my fabric on a windowsill and waited 1/2 hour before carefully peeling the remaining foil .
- A benefit of the process is that you are able to continue working with the same piece of foil until it is completely used up.
I had purchased both foil and glue from a workshop I attended by Lyric Kinard. The materials were easy to use and the quality of the product made for a nice addition to my work. Foil and glue are made by several companies currently but I caution you to read the product details as each company describes its own process. They may work well also but I cannot recommend them as I haven’t personally tried them.
So add a bit of glitz, bling & glimmer to your next piece. Think about where you’d like to draw the viewer’s eye and apply one of a variety of colored foils.
Above all else, have fun with it!
